As an insulation company in Sacramento, CA, we field questions about insulation from our clients on a regular basis. Here’s one of the queries we hear most often: “How do I know when it is time to replace my insulation?”
We wish there were a simple answer—once every 10 years, for example—that we could give our clients when they ask this question. But the truth is that the answer is much more complicated, and depends on numerous different factors. These factors include which type of insulation you have, what condition it is in and what your inspector has to say about it.
With that in mind, here is an overview that should help you figure out when it is time to have your insulation replaced.
Whether your insulation is brand new or over a decade old, there is one piece of advice we can give to everyone: have your insulation inspected by a trained professional at least once a year. Put it on your calendar now, and don’t push it off. This is the most effective way to ensure your insulation doesn’t stick around past its point of safety and usefulness.
Insulation plays a very helpful role in your home, keeping you at a comfortable temperature, blocking out noise pollution and making your house more energy efficient. But if it becomes old and worn, it won’t be as effective—and it could even turn into a safety hazard.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to avoid this fate: have your insulation inspected annually!
Know your insulation
If you want to make your annual insulation inspection go as smoothly as possible, there are a few things to know before the inspector shows up. That includes where your insulation is located, and which type of insulation you have.
There are three main types of insulation: rockwool, cellulose and fiberglass. Rockwool is bumpy, with a pebble-like look, and is more common in older homes. Cellulose is gray and made from recycled paper. Finally, fiberglass comes in bright colors and looks like cotton.
Of course, if you are not sure where your insulation is located or what kind is in your home, your inspector will be able to find out for you. Be sure to ask your inspector any questions that come into your head, so you can have a better idea of what shape your insulation is in, and when it might need to be replaced.
